Table tennis: National Top 8 tournament starts in Accra on Saturday

The 2015/2016 National Top 8 table tennis championship will be held in Accra on this Saturday, January 23 to climax the activities of last year.

It was originally scheduled to have come off in December last year, but had to be pushed forward for other programmes.

This event is being organized by the Ghana Table Tennis Federation (GTTF) and sponsored by Stanbic Bank Ghana and the Graphic Sports newspaper.

The top eight players in both the male and female divisions in terms of ranking will compete for honors on Saturday at the D.G. Hathramani Sports Hall inside the Accra Sports Stadium.

Competing in the men category will be Felix Lartey, Derek Abrefa, Emmanuel Commey, Ben Joe Sam, Emmanuel Asante, Ernest Mawutor, Jacob Saikom and Ishmael Addy.

In the female category, Bernice Borquaye, Afua Oforiwaa, Lynda Annoh, Georgina Hackman, Eva Ampah, Augustina Baidoo, Beatrice Gyasi and Hilda Agbottah will be the combatants.

They will be grouped into two pools of four players each and will play a round-robin contest with the two in each group advancing to the semi-final.

gta1The winners of the semi-final duels will then advance to contest the final for the ultimate prize at stake.

President of the GTTF, Mawuko Afadzinu told the press in Accra on Wednesday that a total prize money of GHc 2,000 is at stake for the winner of this competition in both divisions.

toriola_23_12_15_largeAccording to him, each player will receive an appearance fee for their troubles as the GTTF seeks to start the year on a good note and carry on with its plans for the rest of 2016.
