MTN FA Cup: Hearts of Oak keep double dream alive with 3-0 spanking of Medeama

Ghana champions, Accra Hearts of Oak’s dream of winning the double this season is alive after a clinical 3-0 win over Medeama on Sunday put them through to the final of the 2020/2021 MTN Ghana FA Cup final.

The Phobians will now face AshantiGold – who beat Berekum Chelsea 4-1 early on- in the final.

With the opener on 12 minutes, midfielder Benjamin Afutu Kotey applied a blistering header to a cross from Isaac Mensah.

Mensah later turned scorer- aided by poor goalkeeping- to double their lead and Daniel Barnieh scored from the spot to seal the win.

Richard Attah made his first save of the match in the 24th minute when Medeama captain Joseph Tetteh Zutah fired a feeble shot at goal.

Two minutes in the second half, Isaac Mensah’s attempt from just outside the box was blocked by stalwart defender Vincent Atingah.

The second stanza was tight and compact but Medeama looked exhilarating with their passing game.

Kwadwo Asamoah produced a half volley from outside the penalty arc but it was mis-directed at goal and so Hearts survived another scare.

Medeama’s embroidery was nice but they lacked the cutting despite bombarding the area of the Phobians with aerial balls.

In one of those moments, Amed Toure was clattered in from behind in the box when he jumped to chest down  across.

Just before the hour mark, Hearts doubled their lead thanks to a goalkeeping howler by Frank Boateng.

The Medeama No.1 ended up failing to clear an innocuous ball at the back after it bounced on the turf and veered pass him onto the path of Mensah who had the easiest task of rolling the ball into a gaping net.

Medeama tried to pull one back when Kwadwo Asamoah was given all the time in the world to try  shot from distance- this left Hearts goalie Attah yelling at his players.

Shortly afterwards, Hearts of Oak were awarded a penalty when Boateng brought down Daniel Barnieh.

The spot kick had to be taken twice after the first one was stopped by Boateng but he was offline so it had to be retaken.

Barnieh kept his composure and this time sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to make it three-nil.

With a quarter of an hour left to play, Eric Kwakwa had a decent chance to pull one back for the Tarkwa-based side but from close range, he shot feebly into the hands of Attah.

There was a late flurry from Hearts of Oak but Medeama stood firm and repelled all that including a super save from goalkeeper Boateng to stop a missile from Barnieh.

In added on time, Toure shockingly failed to hit target from close range after a decent cross came in from the left flank.
