Hearts beat Ashgold on penalties to win MTN FA Cup

Accra Hearts of Oak have extended their record as the most successful club in the history of the Ghanaian FA Cup after defeating Ashantigold on penalties after extra time to lift their 11th title on Sunday night at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Phobians today locked horns with the Miners at the Accra Sports Stadium for the final of what has been an exciting cup competition in the 2020/2021 football season.

Playing as the away team on the evening, it was the Phobians that had the first chance as their bright start to the game almost paid off.

Unfortunately, Patrick Razak who was put through by Frederick Ansah Botchway could not hit the target with his miskicked effort going out of play for a goal kick.

From there on, Ashanti Gold SC came in strong and dominated play for a while. Failing to also make good use of their chances, the first half of the contest ended in a goalless stalemate.

Although the finalists will give a good account of themselves in the second half as well, the attackers were not sharp enough, resulting in a goalless draw at the end of the 90 minutes.

With more of the same in the extra 30 minutes played, this season’s MTN FA Cup competition had to be decided with the penalty shootout.

In a nervy shootout, goalkeeper Richard Attah turned the hero for Hearts of Oak as the team won 9-8 at the end of the lottery.

The win means that Hearts of Oak have delightfully won the double at the end of the 2020/2021 football season.
