South Sudan, Uganda book spots in quarterfinals to complete list

Basketballghana.com can confirm Uganda and South Sudan have booked their places in the quarterfinals of the 2021 FIBA African Nations Basketball Championship (AfroBasket).

Both countries secured their qualification earlier today with Uganda shocking Nigeria with an 80-68 win and Kenya succumbing to 58-60 loss to South Sudan.

Competing in its first ever international tournament, South Sudan got the better of a fellow Cinderella story in Kenya who progressed from the group stage in its first AfroBasket in 28 years. Head Coach Liz Mills also made history by becoming the first Female to lead a team to a win at the AfroBasket.

Ngor Kuany and Mareng Gatkouth led Sudan with 10 and 14 points respectively for Sudan while Tylor Ongwae scored 13 points in the game after starring in Kenya’s 72-66 win over Malin in the previous contest with 16 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists.

Uganda surprised many by getting past silver medalist at the previous AfroBasket, Nigeria, with veteran Robinson Opong and Toronto Raptors new recruit Ishmail Wainright driving the Silverbacks.
