AIPS Sport Media Awards launch 2022 edition – Submissions now open

It’s time to restart. The fifth edition of the most prestigious sports journalism award is now open! After the unforgettable ceremony in Doha, Qatar, the AIPS Sport Media Awards are back and waiting for the submissions of the best sport storytellers. Our mission is to continue building a bridge to the future of sports journalism, by showcasing the best works from all over the world.

Since today you can start submitting your work in Photography, Writing, Audio, Video and Young Reporter Under 30 categories using our dedicated website www.aipsawards.com. Deadline for this season’s entries is October 14.

Rules, categories and prizes are the same of last year. Let’s have a quick look.

Dates – The participation period for the 2022 edition accepts works first published or broadcast since November 5, 2021, until October 14, 2022. This applies to all categories. We consider first publication only. In the case of video products, we consider the official release date.

Prizes – Each senior category awards 8,000 US Dollars for the first place, 3,000 US Dollars for the second place and 2,000 US Dollars for the third place. Each of the three Young Reporter Under 30 categories declare one winner (first place) that will receive the AIPS scholarship at a top international event.

Categories – All submissions are individual. Each person can submit two original works across all senior categories. The senior categories are eight: two for Photography (Action Photo and Portfolio), two for Writing (Best Column and Best Colour Piece), three for video (Documentary, Athlete Profile, Short Feature) and one for audio. Proof of publication must be included in each entry form.

The two Special categories, Investigative Reporting and A Life in Sport, are not open to submissions and not entitled to money prize. They are decided by the President of the Jury, Gianni Merlo.

Young Reporters – Applicants born after January 1, 1993 can optionally use one out of their two submissions to participate in the Best Young Reporter category (either in Writing, Broadcasting or Photography) that grants an AIPS scholarship at a top international event.

Voting – No other award can claim the global impact and the thorough judging process, that involves 5 voting stages involving 40 media professionals: a panel of specialists and AIPS mentors, the 24 AIPS Executive Committee members and the 12 AIPS Awards jurors. Together, they will select the most valuable works for each round: longlist, shortlist, top 10, podium nominees and winners. Taking into account all the votes, the AIPS Awards also publish the Continental Rankings. To many professionals, to be featured as one of the best in their region was a career-changing moment.

Free entry – Participation is still free and valid for all media professionals, regardless of their working status: full-time or part-time employees and freelancers. The only condition is to be older than 18 years old on or before November 5, 2021. AIPS members and non-members are equally welcome, as long as participants represent any of the 161 national associations that are part of AIPS.

Growing interest – In the fourth edition there were 133 represented countries (1733 works in total). Colleagues from around the world received a much-deserved recognition both on a local and international level, thanks to the publication of the longlists, the shortlists, the top 10, the podium nominees and the continental rankings.

All languages – While English is the official language, you can submit your work in any language, with or without translation. We kindly recommend that you send your own revised English translation, if possible. Our screening process involves mother tongue speakers. All shortlisted works will be translated into English.

Ceremony – The gala for the podium nominees will take place in April 2023, location to be announced after the submission period closes.

Certificates and mentions – Certificates of participation are given to all entrants. Certificates of Excellence are given to the Top 10 finalists on each category. Certificates of achievement are given to top 10 entrants in the Continental rankings, featuring the most voted works per continent, based on the entrants’ nationalities. For the last edition, the AIPS Awards introduced the certificates of merit, allowing more participants to be celebrated for their contribution to the profession and the AIPS values connecting sport and culture, including the fight against racism and all forms of discrimination; defending Human Rights and gender equality, safeguarding a clean world of sports, defending the importance of access to sources and presenting innovative ways of sports reporting, among others.

Ceremony – The gala for the podium nominees will take place in April 2023, location to be announced after the submission period closes.

More info – You can check all the technical requirements for each category in the website, www.aipsawards.com
