Atonsu, Tech top 2024 MTN Ashantifest Community Soccer Zone B

Atonsu went unbeaten, grabbing two wins and a draw in their three games to emerge tops of Zone B of the ongoing 2024 MTN Ashantifest Community Soccer tournament on Friday in Kumasi

The free scoring side romped to a resounding 3-1 win over eventual runners-up, Tech in their first match of the second group vying for honours in this 4th edition of the now annual competition staged by the telecommunication giants to give back to their cherished customers around the Ashanti Region.

This year’s group stage began last week which saw defending champions, Ejisu and debutants, Adoato grab the two qualification slots in Zone A to the quarter final stage.

Kwadaso and Ashtown kicked the section off with a thrilling 2-2 draw when Zone B action stormed the Konadu Yiadom AstroTurf in Ashtown on Thursday.

That was followed by the aforementioned Atonsu victory against Tech in match number two, of course.

Atonsu made it two straight victories and assured of qualification following a 2-1 triumph over Ashtown in the third and final game of match day one.

The action continued with match number 4 the following day, which saw Tech revive their hopes of advancing with a slim 1-0 win against Kwadaso, thanks to the solitary strike of Clement Antwi Buckman AKA Danger in the only game not to see both teams score.

The decisive match numbers 5 and 6 both ended in deadlocks, Atonsu and Kwadaso playing out an entertaining 4-4 draw whilst Tech battled Ashtown to a 1-1 result in a highly tense game that saw Emmanuel ‘Baby Jet’ of Ashtown miss a crucial penalty following the sending off of Tech’s Nasiru Yakubu ‘Nash.’

It meant that Atonsu won the group with 7 points, followed by Tech whose total of four points all came on match day 2.

Kwadaso and Ashtown are both knocked out after their respective two draws and a defeat in three games and the resultant two points apiece was not enough to earn them passage to the last 8.

Meanwhile, the goalking race of the 2-month long tournament couldn’t be any tighter after Kwame Peprah of Atonsu scored in all 3 games to go joint top with Ernest ‘Baby Jet’ Appiah who also hit 3 goals in their qualification success in Zone A last week.

Ashtown hitman, Nana Prempeh who also scored in all of his side’s group phase fixtures, will have to watch from the sidelines for the rest of the competiton but it is Samuel Kumah AKA Lewandoski who remains an ousider for the golden boot with the two goals he scored in Atonsu’s victories against Tech and Ashtown.
