Victor Cudjoe of Gladiators Cycling Club emerged victorious in the male elite category of the second edition of the Obour Cycling Challenge which pedalled off to a whirlwind success last Sunday.
The 103-kilometre race started in Nsawam, passed through Kyebi, Suhum and Apedwa before ending back in Nsawam, was a thrilling competition that tested the endurance and skills of the patticipating cyclists.
Cudjoe, a Police officer, dominated the race, beating 48 other cyclists to claim the top spot after forming an early breakaway with Prince Kudjofia which they maintained throughout the race. As they approached the finish line, Cudjoe demonstrated remarkable endurance by crossing the line first and securing the ultimate cash prize of Gh¢2,000.
He was followed by Prince Kudjofia in second position whiles Alexander Allotey secured third.
The competitive race recorded an average speed of 38.29/Km/h and a time of 2 hours, 40 minutes, 40 seconds.
Meanwhile, Godfred Willi of Obour Cycling Club emerged the youngest cyclist and Adams Annan came on tops as the oldest cyclist in the second edition of Obour Cycling Challenge.
In the women’s 40 km race, Patience Otuodung of Nigeria emerged victorious after ultimately crossing the finish line first in a fiercely contested race, followed by Abigail Tetteh of Ellen Anium. The 40 km course spanned Nsawam through Apedwa to Suhum and back to Nsawam .
“By participating in the Obour Cycling Challenge, you can not only challenge yourself to new heights but also build endurance and stamina, improve your cardiovascular health, enhance your mental toughness and discipline, and connect with like-minded individuals and cycling enthusiasts who share passion for the sport,” Mr. Obuor addressed the media.
“Thank you to all cyclists who registered to participate in our event, we’re thrilled to have you on board and appreciate your enthusiasm,” he said.
“Our goal is to support and empower cyclists like you by organising Obour Cycling Challenge that promote the sport and build a sense of community. We’re looking forward to hosting more events in the future and hope you’ll join us again,” Mr. Obuor added.
Although the Federation’s Secretary General was unable to attend the event in person, he sent a heartfelt message expressing his deepest appreciation and praise to the organizers for their tireless efforts in bringing the cycling community together. His message was met with applause and gratitude from the participants, who understood the value of his endorsement.
The publicity was great, and the athletes were thrilled on the route. This event will not only profit the athletes but the people in Nsawam, Suhum and Apedwa.
“Let’s support the organisers led by Emmanuel Obour,” General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shabban Mohammed stated.
“We are very happy that this event is being organised in here in Nsawam Apedwa. We, the drivers and traders associations, will support and make it a success,” added a newly converted cycling fan in Nsawam.

The next edition of the Obour Cycling Challenge is expected to be even bigger, with the organisers promising to host an even more spectacular event in November.

Ladies ladies 40Km:
The competitive race which was in a distance of 40km, recorded an average speed of 21.54 and a time of l hour 41 minutes 58 seconds.
The top three positions in the women’s category were:
Ist position Patience Otudung Abasi (Gh¢500)
2nd position Abigail Tetteh (Gh¢300)
3rd position Ellen Anim (Gh¢200).
The organisers also awarded pasts cyclists who have significantly contributed to the development of cycling in Ghana namely Emmanuel Wayoo, William Afful, Hammond Martey and Francis Tetteh.
