Jiménez stops Torres, retains WBA interim title

Costa Rica’s David “Medallita” Jiménez (18-1, 12 KOs) took a major step forward in his career by scoring an 11th-round knockout over Mexico’s Kenbun Torres (15-6, 10 KOs) in a bout for the WBA interim super flyweight title, held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

The 12-round contest was controlled by the Costa Rican from the opening bell. With an aggressive yet precise style, “Medallita” wore Torres down with steady combinations to the body and head. In round 11, with just 53 seconds remaining, he landed a crushing left hook to the liver that left Torres unable to respond—sealing a technical knockout that’s already being hailed as one of the best finishes of the year.

Jiménez, 33, from Cartago, showed composure and ring IQ throughout. Even after sustaining a cut over his right eyebrow in the eighth round, he maintained control and closed the show in dominant fashion. “What a blessing to say good morning like this—with heart, grit, and passion—showing what we Costa Ricans are made of,” he said after the fight.

The event, promoted by Japan’s Koki Kameda, marked the debut of professional boxing in Kyrgyzstan and was declared a success by local media outlets. Jiménez expressed gratitude to the host nation: “Thank you to this beautiful country. I love your culture, your people—thank you for the opportunity to fight here.”

With this performance, “Medallita” Jiménez strengthens his position as one of Latin America’s top names in the lighter weight classes. His next goal: to become the first Costa Rican male fighter to win a full world championship.
