Musah Lawson vs Lesko Sossiya headlines Ghana Professional Boxing League fight night 2

Musah Lawson of Sonia Boxing Club will make his maiden national super welterweight title defense against Panix Boxing Club’s Charles Lesko Sossiya on the Ghana Professional Boxing League Fight Night II in Accra’s Bukom Boxing Arena Saturday night.

On Friday afternoon, Lawson (6-0, 6 KOs) and Sossiya (3-1, 3 KOs) made weight ahead of the league’s main event.

Lawson tipped the scale at 152.7 pounds, Sossiya weighed 153.4 pounds.

“It is going to be a war but I will successfully defend my title at the end of the fight,” Lawson told BoxingAfrica.com.

“I don’t think he has what it takes to defeat me and I promise him that I will be aggressive in the ring.”

Sossiya was equally confident, telling BoxingAfrica.com that an upset was brewing. “He is a great fighter but I am ready to go for his belt and he must prepare for me because it’s going to be fireworks.”

The goal of the Ghana Professional Boxing League Saturday’s league, which is being promoted by IMAX Media Group in collaboration with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), is to reward the nation’s best boxing clubs and fighters.

The two parties signed a five-year sponsorship deal worth $1.7 million last December to launch the league and continue its operations.

Meanwhile, the league and the GBA continue to face condemnation from some stakeholders (managers and promoters) who are opposed to the mode of organisation.

When asked how boxers are selected for the event, Abraham Kotei Neequaye, president of the GBA, said trainers of the participating gyms have the prerogative of choosing a boxer to represent them depending on the weight required by the organisers.

“For instance, we give out the gym pairings to all the participants and asked them to look for a boxer in a particular weight class to fight an opponent.

“We don’t take part in the pairings because we don’t have that right. Every competition has it challenges so we will rectify any mismatches going forward,” Neequaye told BoxingAfrica.com.

On the undercard, Alidu Suleman (Black Panthers) will face Daniel Oduro (Attoh Quarshie) in a super lightweight bout, and John Quaye of Sea View Boxing Club takes on Wisdom Boxing Club’s Solomon Nettey in a super featherweight contest.

In a super lightweight contest, Benjamin Tetteh of Akotoku Boxing Academy will fight Joshua Barnor of Palm Springs Boxing Club, Fit Square Boxing Club’s Elvis Attorgah will slug it out with Charles Quartey Boxing Foundation’s Hamed Mohammed at super middleweight with a cruiserweight contest involving debutant Kwame Kuma Kuwe (The Gym Boxing Club) and Stephen Abbey (Seconds Out Boxing Club).
