9-man Black Stars beat Chile on penalties to win bronze at 2022 Kirin Cup

Nine-man Ghana defeated Chile 3-1 on penalties in the third-place game of 2022 Kirin Cup in Japan on Tuesday. The game travelled to penalties after it ended goalless in regulation time.

Ahead of the game, Ghana coach Otto Addo made five changes in the squad to face Chile in the third-place game.

Goalkeeper Ati-zigi who conceded four goals against Japan was dropped for Abdul Manaf Nurudeen while Baba Rahman started in defence ahead of Hearts of Oak defender Dennis Korsah.

Benjamin Tetteh, Afena-Gyan started in attack together with captain Andre Ayew.

Benjamin Tetteh was played through in Chile’s box but his last ditch effort was denied by crossbar on 50th minute.

Ghana came close to opening the scoring once again after Andre Ayew’s powerful shot was parried away by Chile goalkeeper. Benjamin Tetteh’s header from the resulting corner kick was denied by the crossbar.

Alidu Seidu was sent off in the 67th minute after a poor tackle on a Chile player.

Ten minutes later, Wakaso Mubarak was also sent off for challenging the referee’s decision after a Ghanaian player was brought down.

The game ended goalless as Chile failed to capitalise on the numerical advantage handed them.

During penalty shootouts, former Ghana youth goalkeeper Manaf saved two of the four kicks by Chile with another going off target.

Ghana used this game as a preparation for 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Angola in September as well as a dress rehearsal for 2022 FIFA World Cup to be staged in Qatar in November.
