Legendary boxing trainer “Alloway” passes on

Legendary boxing trainer Godwin Nii Dzanie Kotey “Alloway” Kotey is dead

Godwin Nii Dzanie Kotey

Respected Ghanaian boxing trainer Godwin Nii Dzanie Kotey a.k.a. Alloway, who previously handled Azumah Nelson, Joshua Clottey and Joseph Agbeko  has “thrown in the towel” after a brief illness at his home in Accra.

Coach Alloway,  56, had a wealth of experience in the game with almost four decades of industriousness in the pugilistic sport.  His recent ill health was the reason he was unable to man Joshua Clottey’s corner in the ex-world champions recent loss in the US.

allo“His absence from my fight was one of the main reasons why I couldn’t win. I won the first four rounds and only needed Coach Alloway’s voice to tell me to change my strategy.”

“I am devastated. This is very tough for me and a very painful moment,” Clottey said in an interview.

A similar situation occurred some five years ago when Clottey fought and lost to Manny Pacquaio in Texas. The deceased trainer was denied a US visa  and they shed uncontrollable tears in a news conference together with Joshua during a news conference at the Accra Stadium.

allo9Coach Alloway was the pioneering President of the United Ghana Boxing coaches Association, one of the most vocal stakeholder bodies within Ghana boxing.

The deceased Coach Alloway was also the Head Trainer for the Attoh Quarshie Gym in Accra where he trained many boxers including highly-rated lightweight George ‘Red Tiger’ Ashie, Heavyweight Frimpong and many others.

allo8Godwin Nii Dzanie Kotey led the boxing coaches body to push for major reforms in the sport and also led a lot of advocacy including issues of welfare of boxers and their trainers.

The seasoned trainer passed on at his residence near the Salaga Market off the Atta-Mills High Street in Accra at around 5.30pm on Saturday.
