Official: Debut African IBA Champions’ Night in Addis Ababa on 17 August

Zambia’s Patrick Chinyemba and Ghana’s Theophilus Allotey will headline this historic night of boxing. Chinyemba became the first African to win an IBA Champions’ Night when he defeated Russia’s Artur Nagapetian in Dushanbe, Tajikistan. It is fitting that he is rewarded with a main event in the 51kg category over eight rounds.

The All-Africa champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist will take on All-Africa bronze medallist Allotey, whom he defeated in Accra en route to his African title last year.

Congo’s Peter Pita Kabeji, the reigning African Championship and All-Africa Games champion, will meet Tanzania’s Yusuf Changalawe in an eight-round 80kg bout. This will be a rematch of Kabeji’s unanimous decision win at the African Games semi-final.

Uzbekistan’s Nodirjon Mirzakhmedov and Kazakhstan’s Temirtas Zhussupov meet in the 51kg over eight rounds, as do Mexico’s Daniel Valladares and Russia’s Edmond Khudoyan. European champion and world bronze medallist Khudoyan has a history with Zhussupov – whom he beat at IBA Champions’ Night Belek – but he has never faced former IBF minimumweight world titleholder Valladares. Zhussupov, the 2021 world champion, meets Mirzakhmedov again after beating him at the Belgrade World Championships. The Uzbek boxer is a two-time Asian champion.

Four matches complete the undercard, including a women’s 75kg match between World Championships and African Games bronze medallist Rady Gramane of Mozambique and African Games champion Patricia Mbata of Nigeria.

Ethiopia’s Temesgen Mitiku meets African Games silver medallist Yassine Elouarz of Morocco in the 75kg category and Mitiku’s teammate Abubeker Sefan takes on Ghana’s young African Games champion and Commonwealth Games runner-up Joseph Commey in the 60kg division.
