The KGL Group on Thursday, presented a cheque of five million Ghana Cedis (Gh¢5,000,000) to the Black Stars World Cup Fund, part of their Gh¢10m pledge to support the government backed initiative to finance Ghana’s participation at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Others to also honour their pledges were Serene Insurance (Gh¢2m + Gh¢20m insurance cover for players), Juwel Energy (Gh¢1m), Icon Energy (Gh¢1m), Erata Motors (Gh¢200,000), Pay Angel (Gh¢100,000) and an individual, Alex Okyere of KAF Company Limited (Gh¢240,000).

Deputy Finance Minister, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, who received the cheques at a short ceremony at the Ministry of Finance conference room, acknowledged receipts of the contributions and expressed gratitude to the donors and called for the gesture to serve as a motivation for others to also honour their pledges.

He revealed that Thursdays have been set aside for the presentations and redemption of pledges and donations to the fund, as the countdown to Ghana’s opening match against Panama in Toronto, Canada on June 17 edges ever closer.

“The Black stars are grateful to all of you for the show of love. Even though the first two friendly matches didnt go well, we are still optimistic that the Black Stars will go to the World Cup and make all of us proud,” Mr Ampem said.

“All the funds are going directly into the account of the Bank of Ghana, to be channeled to support the Black Stars. So those yet to redeem your pledges you have the opportunity to do so before we meet the media next Thursday to announce new contributors, thank you,” the MP for Asuogyaman stated.

The fundraising campaign with a $30m target was launched by President John Dramani Mahama last month to mobilize funds from corporate bodies and the public, including a raffle to boost national support for the Black Stars’ preparations, friendly matches, and logistics ahead of the June 11-July 19 tournament.

Ghana has been drawn in a demanding Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia, a line-up that is already shaping expectations around the scale of preparation required. The President stressed on the collective responsibility of Ghanaians to support the team’s success, with over $11 million raised at the launch event at Kempinski Hotel in Accra on March 20.

“We are here to present our widow’s might to the team. KGL has been an avid supporter of the Black Stars, and in the past we’ve already contributed a lot of money to the GFA for the same cause. So when we heard the clarion call we said well lets continue to support the Black Stars. That’s why we are here,” said Kenneth Mpare, Executive Director of KGL
