Ike Quartey impressed with Samuel Takyi’s victory in SA

Samuel Takyi is expected to arrive in Ghana today following an emphatic second-round stoppage victory over Mandlenkosi Sibuso at the Emperors Palace in Johannesburg last Saturday.

Takyi recorded two knockdowns against the South African before stopping Sibuso in their super featherweight clash to mark a second successful professional win.

The Olympic bronze medallist travelled for the bout in the company of his trainer, Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey, and Manager, Clement Quartey.

In an interview with the Graphic Sports from their Johannesburg base, Ike Quartey said he was elated with his ward’s performance, his first outside Ghana since turning professional this year.

The former WBA welterweight champion added that he was satisfied with Takyi’s performance, especially when the fight came at short notice.

“We are scheduled to arrive home on Monday. I am very happy with the performance, especially when the fight came at a short notice.

“Takyi is very talented and I am ready to make him a champion in the coming years. We are glad to have started on a bright note,” Quartey said.

Takyi (2-0, 2 KOs) made his debut in April when he earned a second-round knockout victory over Kamarudeedn Boyefio following an impressive outing at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics.

The 21-year-old made boxer history by ending Ghana’s 29-year wait for an Olympic medal when he won bronze at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo last year.
