The World Boxing Association (WBA) released its January rankings with all the changes that happened in the first month of the year and, in addition, unveiled the Boxer of the Month award that went to Gervonta Davis.
Ukrainian Artem Dalakian was also awarded Honorable Mention for his outstanding performance in defense of his world championship last weekend.
Gervonta made the first big fight of the year last January 7 when he defended his WBA lightweight belt against Hector Garcia in Washington. The American showed, once again, the reason why he is one of the most relevant fighters in boxing by summoning a large crowd in the arena and getting a victory with authority.
Davis came from less to more against an opponent like Garcia, who started the fight in a very orderly manner, with a good counterattack and responding to everything the champion proposed. However, “Tank” was patient and began to decipher little by little the Dominican to feel more comfortable as the rounds went by.
In the end, he managed to make him stay in his corner before the ninth round due to the punishment he was giving me and thus made a new defense of his black and gold belt.
In Dalakian’s case, he had a tough fight in London against Costa Rican David Jimenez but appealed to his experience and skills to win a unanimous decision of 115-113, 115-113 and 116-112 in an action-packed bout with a high volume of punches from both fighters.
The WBA rankings lists are available to the public in the corresponding section of the official website since January 31.
