The annual GeeBee Boxing Tournament returns with the 41st edition next month in the Finnish capital, Helsinki with an overwhelming sixteen countries from across the globe due to compete for medals, the organisers have confirmed.
Billed for its ritual home, the Helsinki Sports Hall which has hosted every single edition of the GeeBee Boxing Tournament since its inception in 1982, and fully sanctioned by both the Finnish Boxing Federation and European Boxing Commission (EUBC), the 2023 event will see an increase in participating teams by two, compared to 14 last year.
National teams confirrmed for this year’s tournament spanning April 13-16 are hosts Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Estonia, Lithuania, France, England, Scotland, Wales, Canada, Bahrain, Germany, USA, Israel and Ukraine.
“The interest to participate in our tournament has been huge this year. We have so far 16 countries attending the tournament, including Finland, of course,” said Päivi Ahola, Communication Manager of the GeeBee Tournament.
Named after legendary Finnish amateur and professional heavyweight boxer, Gunnar ‘GeeBee’ Bärlund, the tournament is organised by the voluntary workers of Pro GeeBee Association and the Finnish Workers’ Sports Federation. Competition has seen more than 2800 boxers vying for honours in its previous 40 editions.
And as usual, medals will be given to deserved winners of gold, silver and 2 bronze for each of 21 weight categories competing for honours in mid-April in Helsinki.
