Robert Kofi Egyir: the new Thomas Partey making waves with Light Gate FC in Tema

19 year old Robert Kofi Egyir is on the rise, and fast.

The teenage sensation has taken the Ghanaian Division 3 League in Tema by storm with Light Gate FC so much he has been hailed the new Thomas Partey, after the Arsenal and Ghana star who incidentally also navigated his football career via Tema Youth.

The Partey nickname may be due to a striking resemblance with the former Atletico Madrid star, but young Egyir does also influence games much like the deputy Ghana captain even though their main positions in midfield differ.

A versatile dribbler who can play on both wings, Egyir can also be implored in the famous ‘false 9’ role to perfection which has seen him score and assist several goals for Tema Newtown based Light Gate FC who currently sit 5th in the league, a mere three points behind the leaders at the end of the first round.

This season has not been smooth for Egyir however as an ankle injury at the beginning of the campaign struck him down, resulting in his missing many matches and only returned towards the end of round one. He still has assisted 3 goals and scored one himself in four league games as he awaits to unleash his skills in the second half of the season in pursuit of promotion for Light Gate FC.

“Robert is a very good player with great potential to become one of the very best in the world. I always compare him to Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Jr because he has same qualities as those players,” said his manager, Samuel Coffie.

“He is an attacking midfielder with pace, speed and strength who can sometimes play as a striker. He plays in any of numbers 7, 8 or 11 and sometimes as a false 9. He is one for the future,” Mr. Coffie affirmed.

For the player himself, the mission on hand is to propel Light Gate FC to the top division of Ghanaian football but beyond that, also has eyes firmly set on playing for his country and will therefore welcome a move to a bigger club.

“Yes I’m still very young, just 19 years but the time to work is now so I’m focused as ever. Tbe dream is to get a national team call-up but I’m also ready to play for any team in the Ghana Premier League,” young Egyir said full of poise.
