The Africa Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships total prize money has now been doubled from $500,000 in Maputo last year to $1,000,000 in this year’s event set for Yaounde in Cameroon.
Also, the tournament has been rescheduled for July 25 to August 6 in Yaounde, Cameroon.
AFBC President, Bertrand Mendouga said these are the major decisions reached at today’s AFBC Board of Directors online meeting which was also attended by the International Boxing Association (IBA) President, Umar Kremlev.
Gold medallists in Yaounde will earn $20,000, silver take $10,000 and $5,000 for the two bronze medal winners. In Maputo gold medallists received $10,000, silver had $5,000 and $2,500 for the two bronze medallists.
Said Mendouga, “Our decision on the new dates for the Africa Championships is final, and we’re now geared towards hosting a spectacular tournament.”
Mendouga said IBA President Kremlev appealed to the African countries to be calm in the wake of the latest IOC development regarding the status of IBA.
“Kremlev adviced us to remain calm without being bothered by the outcome of the IOC threat to deregister the international body,” said Mendouga.
