The medal celebration is over for Kenya’s Christine Ongare (pictured left in action).
She had earlier on got a bye to the semi-finals to take on Morocco’s World Championships bronze medallist Yasmin Mouttaki.
Ongare was therefore assured of a medal win or lose. Now she will have to fight Bengono to qualify for the semis.
Mouttaki and Tunisia’s Wala Hafsi received byes to the semis in the revised draws. Hafsi will meet the winner between last year’s silver medallist in Maputo, Fatiah Mansouri of Algeria and South Africa’s Vuyolwethu Dila
“They forgot to include my boxer in the draws, we had to remind them and they complied,” said a relieved coach of Cameroon’s national team Alain Didier Ngatcha.
Bengono, a bronze medallist in last year’s Africa Championships in Maputo, is one of Cameroon’s medal prospects and the longest-serving international in the current team.
She won a silver medal in the 2017 Africa Championships in Brazzaville with Ongare taking home a bronze medal.
