The eagerly awaited 2023 Gbese Homowo Charity Cup match, featuring Accra Hearts of Oak against Accra Great Olympics, has been abruptly called off.
The fixture, originally slated to take place on Sunday at the Accra Sports Stadium, was an integral part of the annual Homowo festival, a celebrated tradition among the Ga community.
Although Accra Great Olympics has not officially articulated the reason behind their withdrawal from the tournament, indications point toward a financial dispute as the root cause.
A statement released by the event’s organizers conveyed the unfortunate news: “The Homowo Cup match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Accra Great Olympics, initially scheduled for Sunday, August 20, 2023, has been cancelled.
“This decision arises from a last-minute withdrawal by Accra Great Olympics. We extend our sincerest apologies to Nii Dr Ayi Bonte-Gbese Mantse, the Ghana Football Association, Accra Hearts of Oak SC, the media, and all football enthusiasts for this regrettable turn of events.”
The cancellation has left football enthusiasts and supporters disappointed, as the much-anticipated encounter would have provided an exciting display of talent and competition within the context of the Homowo festival.
