Ex-Black Stars striker, Augustine Ahinful, has not ruled out the possibility of the Black Stars winning the next year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire after their uninspiring performances recently.
According to the former national team hitman, anything at all is possible provided the team would adequately prepare for the tournament with a different mindset.
Speaking to the Graphic Sports in an interview, the former Borussia Dortmund U-19 star said the focus shouldn’t only be on the AFCON but the upcoming World Cup qualifiers next month which he believes is very crucial to our success in the continental showpiece.
“Anything is possible only that we need to be prepared for what lies ahead of us. It’s not only the AFCON next month, but we also have two World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros so we need to clear that hurdle before we can think about the AFCON,” Ahinful emphsised.
The 49-year-old attacker, who was capped 19 time for the national team, believes the two upcoming games are more significant as their outcome could have a significant influence on what we should expect at the AFCON.
“The next important match is the one in November and that would be like a preparatory game towards the AFCON. How we perform next month will be a very big determining factor to what we intend doing in January”, he told the Graphic Sports.
Ghana have been pooled in Group I alongside Comoros, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Mali and Madagascar for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be jointly hosted by USA, Canada and Mexico with the first matches expected to be played between November 13-21.
