A whirlwind 24 hours in Sydney, but Team Germany found a way to snatch United Cup glory.
Alexander Zverev was at the heart of a pair of remarkable triumphs for his team as the 2024 edition of the mixed-teams event came to a thrilling conclusion inside Ken Rosewall Arena. Alongside three-time major winner Angelique Kerber and WTA Tour doubles star Laura Siegemund, Zverev helped engineer tense wins against Australia and Poland to secure victory for his country.
“It’s been absolutely amazing. It’s been a pleasure and it’s been absolutely so much fun for everybody to be part of this team, especially for me,” Zverev told his teammates during the trophy ceremony in the early hours of Monday morning. “I really thank you guys for being part of this. I really couldn’t be happier sharing this trophy with anybody than you guys.”
The No. 6 in the Pepperstone ATP Rankings, Zverev saved two match points to notch a crucial singles win against Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz in Sunday’s final, before saving two match points with Siegemund en route to a deciding mixed-doubles victory for the second consecutive day.
Despite championship-match disappointment, Poland can reflect on another strong United Cup run. The top-seeded nation’s WTA World No. 1 Iga Swiatek, who went 5-0 across singles matches at the event, was crowned tournament MVP.
“It was really tight. Last year we made it to the semi-finals, this year to the final so hopefully the next step is going to be winning,” reflected Swiatek. “For sure we’re making progress.”
