On Sunday evening, the Memphis Grizzlies defeated the Phoenix Suns by a score of 121-115.
However, they were playing without their best player (Ja Morant), who was out due to a shoulder injury.
The Grizzlies have now announced (on Monday evening) that Morant will undergo season-ending surgery.
Via Grizzlies PR:
“The Memphis Grizzlies today announced the following medical update for guard Ja Morant:
At Saturday’s training session, Morant suffered a subluxation of his right shoulder. Following ongoing soreness and instability, Morant underwent an MRI that revealed an underlying labral tear.
Morant will undergo season-ending surgery and is expected to make a full recovery ahead of the 2024-25 season.”
Morant played in nine games this season and had averages of 25.1 points, 5.6 rebounds and 8.1 assists per contest while shooting 47.1% from the field and 27.5% from the three-point range.
The Grizzlies are the 13th seed in the Western Conference with a 13-23 record in their first 36 games.
They are 6-4 over their last ten games and are in the middle of a two-game winning streak.
On Tuesday evening, the Grizzlies will visit Kyrie Irving and the Dallas Mavericks in Texas.
Morant was the second pick in the 2019 NBA Draft out of Murray State and is in his fifth season in the league.
His career averages are 22.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, 7.4 assists and 1.0 steals per contest while shooting 47.2% from the field and 31.8% from the three-point range in 257 regular season games.
He has also led the Grizzlies to the NBA playoffs in each of the previous three seasons.
