AFBC take charge of Accra 2023 Africa Games boxing

The Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) will be fully in charge of the organisation of Africa Games boxing tournament in Accra in March.

AFBC’s head of communication, Lukelo Willilo, said they’ve been given the mandate to be in charge of boxing by the Games’ organising committee.

“We’ve discussed the issue with the top officials of the organising committee who’ve given us their bblessings to organise the boxing event in conjunction with the relevant authorities in Ghana,” said Willilo.

“Already we’ve started the registration of teams through our data base, we will also be in charge on the appointment of officials from the tournament director to RJs. The entries deadline is February 23.”

Over 30 countries are expected to trade leather in the African Games boxing tournament to take place from 14-23.

Top African boxers,  among them world female heavyweight champion Khadija Mardi of Morocco, defending featherweight champion Keamogotse Kenosi of Botswana, Zambia’s colourful flyweight Patrick Chinyemba and defending welterweight champion Merven Clair of Mauritius will take part in the Games boxing tournament including all the 18 African boxers who have qualified for the Paris Olympics.

Boxing has featured in all the 12 editions of the Africa Games since their inauguration in 1965 in Congo Brazzaville.

Morocco are the reigning Africa Games boxing champions having won the event as hosts in 2019 in Rabat with four gold, two silver and one bronze.

They were followed by Botswana in second place 2-1-0, Algeria 2-0-3, Egypt 2-0-2 and fifth-placed Nigeria 1-1-5.
