Chorkor were a class apart against Dome-Kwabenya in the opening match of the 2024 McDan Ga-Dangme Peace & Unity Cup which rocked the McDan La Town Park on Saturday evening, handing out a comprehensive 4-0 hammering in front of a sizable crowd.
The 4th edition in a football competition earmarked to preach peace and unity in Ga-Dangme land ahead of the upcoming Ghanaian general elections in December, it features a total of 24 communities in the Greater Accra Region battling for the ultimate in a competition which runs July-November.
Saturday’s tournament opener, one of 8 preliminary knockout ties to determine which teams join the 8 which have drawn a bye into the round of 16, got the event off to an exciting start with beautiful soccer exhibition under the crisp floodlights in Labadi.
Chorkor arrived early, and after hitting a shot on target less than a minute into the game, soon took the lead even before the game clock hit the 3-minute mark.
Despite a somewhat even ball possession, Chorkor continued to create a plethora of better chances the rest of the opening half but couldn’t add to the tally, much to the relief of Dome-Kwabenya.
But the picture changed completely in the second half when thunder struck twice after Chorkor hitman, Enoch Aryeetey doubled his personal and team’s tally with the second goal barely a minute after the restart.
It was almost over for Dome-Kwabenya whose woes were compunded by the sending off of top midfielder, Adams midway through the half.
Chorkor promptly took advantage and sealed the rout with two late goals through man-of-the-match, Ishmael Nortey and namesake, Shadrack Nortey in the 86th and 88th minutes respectively.
The result means that Dome-Kwabenya are eliminated entirely from the competition which spans till November, whilst Chorkor march on in their vow to annex the ultimate trophy this term.
The action continues with match day 2 and match 2 Sunday when Nima/Mamoobi and their army of supporters invade the same McDan La Town Park to battle Weija-Gbawe for a place in the round of 16.
The competition held under the auspices of renowned businessman, Dr. Daniel McKorley, better known as McDan to foster peace and unity within the G-Dangme people who inhabut the Greater Accra Region of Ghana, first began as a 4-team event in 2014 but has expanded this term to an unprecedented 24 communities to play across 3 venues, all McDan constructed astro turfs in Sege, Teshie and La of course.
The 2024 tournament was officially kicked off by the Organising Committee Chairman, Jonathan Nii Akrong who hailed the turn of events on match day one and is excited for what lies ahead.
“We thank God for such a good game to kick off the tournament. Attendance was very good, the two teams comported themselves very well before, during and after the game,” Mr. Akrong said.
“We never expected the scoreline but the team that lost conceded defeat and the team which won also jubilated, that’s just what this is all about. We are using football and tradition to drive peace and unity which already exists in our communities,” he added.
