Goal king race heats up as MTN Ashantifest Soccer hits semi finals

Just four matches remain in the 2024 MTN Ashantifest Community Soccer tournament and the race to earn the top scorer award has become hotter, with 4 players tied at the top on 3 goals each through the quarter finals.

Ernest Appiah AKA Baby Jet of Adoato and George ‘Henry’ Antwi of Amakom stand the brightest chance now, with their respective teams still in contention whilst their contenders, Kwame Peprah of Atonsu and Nana Prempeh of Ashtown will have to watch from the sidelines following the exits by their own sides too.

Appiah who also opened the scoring for Adoato in the preliminary round win over Adum, was also first to strike for the debutants in the group phase, ensuring a 1-0 win over Fante New Town in their first match in Zone A.

After drawing a blank in their 0-1 loss to defending champions, Ejisu, ‘Baby Jet’ was again on song, banging in both goals to give his side a 2-1 win over Suame to seal qualification into the quarter finals.

He failed to score in their quarter final win over rival, Kwame Peprah’s Atonsu at the weekend when experienced former Ghana Premier League top scorer, Augustine Okrah netted the only goal, but young Appiah goes head-to-head in the semi final against the other contender still alive, George Antwi who also scored all his 3 goals in group stage play.

Fondly nicknamed ‘Henry’ after the famous French footballer, Antwi netted a brace to lead Atonsu, 4-0 past hosts Dichemso to open Zone C action back on June 28, before adding another in a 2-1 win over Aboabo in their second game to guarantee qualification even before their last group game.

Bantama starting line-up against Abrepo

Now it’s a straight fight for the ultimate goalking title when the two hitmen meet in the second semi final between their teams on Friday at the same Dichemso Otumfuor Park.

Meanwhile Henry ‘Pogba’ Opoku of Bantama and Amakom duo, Elvis Kyei Baffour alias Awukye who just signed a contract to return to the Ghana Premier League with Asante Kotoko as well as Nana ‘La Liga’ Kwame, remain dark horses for the same award, with all 3 sitting on two goals apiece and sniffing any opportunity to get on the scoresheet and right away into the goal king race.
