Nima/Mamobi are through to the next round of the 2024 McDan Ga-Dangme Peace & Unity Cup following a slim 1-0 victory over Weija-Gbawe Sunday afternoon in Labadi.
The decisive moment of the match came in the 36th minute when unlucky Weija-Gbawe defender, Desmond Opare put through his own goal to give Nima the lead they held on till the end.
Weija-Gbawe made a number of changes in the second half including replacing former Berekum Chelsea and Ghana national team defender, Richard Kissi Boateng, but the side captained by former Kotoko player, Obed Owusu couldn’t find a way back.
1-0 it finished in favour of Nima/Mamobi who had on parade, Black Galaxies’ Kassim Razak and who now advance into the round of 16 where Sege, Labadi, Teshie, Ada, Chorkor of course and many others await later in this tournament that runs from July to November aimed at fostering peace in the Greater Accra Region leading up to the 2024 Ghana general elections.
Bernard Ababio of Nima-Mamobi was named the man-of-the-match and immediately began beating war drums, insisting his community are in the tournament to win it
“The game was a bit tough but the strategy of our coach worked. We were expecting a win because we have a very good team, I believe in my teammates,” Ababio said post match.
“We created very good chances early on and we should have won the first half 3-0. Anyways we are delighted to qualify and I am warning all our opponents to expect good performance, we are winning this trophy,” he added.
Nima thus become the second team to win in the prelims following Chorkor’s magnificent conquest, 4-0 against Dome-Kwabenya on the opening day of the 5-month long competition on Saturday.
The 24-team competition powered by renowned businessman and philanthropist, Dr. Daniel McKorley, popularly called McDan continues with the preliminary fixtures at the two other match venues next weekend.
First, Madina play Dodowa at the McDan Teshie Sports Complex on Saturday before the McDan Sports Complex in Sege hosts a doubleheader the following day featuring Ashaiman versus Prampram and Nkwantanang against Kpone-Katamanso.
Present to support the event on Sunday was the wife of McDan, Mrs. Abigail McKorley who affirmed her family’s commitment to the theme of peace and unity in the Ga-Dangme land.
“We started this some few years ago with just 4 communities and we are excited how big it has grown to now 24. Our aim is to promote peace and unity in our society and there can be no better platform than football which has always united us,” Mrs. McKorley stated.
“We want to encourage people that we are all Ghanaians, we want peace. Ghana is all we have, no where else to go so we must love each other no matter our political differences before, during and after the elections,” she said.
