False start for Africa: Egypt’s Yomna Ayyad beaten on walkover

Africa’s first boxer on the opening day of Olympic Games Yomna Ayyad gave away a walkover to Uzbekistan’s Nigini Oktamova in the bantamweight division.

A report from the organisers said the African Games bronze medallist failed a medical check and weigh-in.

The report read: “On the weigh-in today, 27th of July, 2024, boxer Ayyad Yomna of Egypt in the women’s 54kg category failed the medical check and weigh-in. The result of the bout Uktamova Nigina wins by walkover.”

It’s all over now for the 21-year-old Ayyad. The only consolation is she remains Egypt’s first ever female boxer to have qualified for the Olympics though she didn’t take part.

With Ayyad out, Egypt is now left with two boxers, light-middleweight Omar Elawady and light-heavyweight Abdelrahman Orabi.
