Tiago Muxanga put a smile on the faces of African boxing fans with a text-book performance to punch his way to the pre-quarters on Sunday night, July 28.
The Mozambican Commonwealth Games silver medallist outpointed Germany’s Magomed Elim Sultanovic in the round of 32 light-middleweight duel at the North Paris Arena.
He now meets Mexico’s 2023 Pan American Games gold medallist Marco Alonso Alvarez on Wednesday evening, July 31, in what promises to be a thrilling light-middleweight round of 16 battle. The Mexican received a bye to the pre-quarters.
Meanwhile, Mozambican two time -African champion and world silver medallist Alcinda Dos Santos scored a unanimous points win over Slovakia’s Jessica Triebelova in round of 32 welterweight fight to advance to the pre-quarters.
Alcinda now meets China’s second-seeded world welterweight champion Yang Liu on Thursday, August 1, in the round of 16. Liu, who also won silver at the 2019 world championships and gold in the 2022 Asian Championships, received a bye to the pre-quarters.
Alcinda and compatriot Tiago Muxanga are so far the only African winners, and are among the 18 African boxers still in the competition while five have been eliminated.
