Algeria’s Imane Khelif gives Africa second boxing medal in Paris 2024 Olympics

Imane Khelif weathered a toxic gender storm to beat Hungary’s Anna Luca Hammori 5-0 in the welterweight quarter-finals of the Paris Olympics boxing tournament on Saturday.

Khelif was dominant throughout the fight.

Her victory gives Algeria their first Olympic boxing medal in 28 years and the second one for Africa in this year’s Olympic Games after Cape Verde’s David Pina’s qualification to the semi-finals.

The last medal for Algeria came from the late Hocine Soltani who won the country’s first gold and the eighth one for Africa at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Khelif now meets Thailand’s world silver medallist Janjaem Suwannapheng in the semi-finals on August 6. The Thai boxer shocked Turkey’s Olympic defending welterweight champion Busenaz Surmeneli with a points win in the quarters.
