Accra Hearts of Oak have bolstered their squad with the signing of Stephen Appiah Asare, popularly known as ‘Shankiki.’
The 28-year-old winger has penned a two-year deal with the Phobians, marking his third stint in the Ghana Premier League.
Appiah Asare, a former student of Osei Kyeretwie Senior High School in the Ashanti Region, first made a name for himself with Kumasi Krofrom-based club KFC Samosa.
His exceptional performances helped the team secure a spot in the Division One league in 2015, where he played alongside future stars like Kwadwo Amoako (Aduana Stars), Emmanuel Sarkodie (Vision FC), and Kwame Adom Frimpong (St George’s Ethiopia).
In 2017, Appiah joined Tema Youth Football Club, where he showcased his leadership qualities and skill on the flanks. Despite the club’s relegation from the Ghana Premier League that year, Appiah remained a key figure in the team.
His standout moment came in 2021 when he captained Tema Youth to a runner-up finish in the maiden Division One Super League at the Madina Zongo AstroTurf, narrowly losing to Skyy FC on penalties.
During the 2020-21 season, Appiah once again played a crucial role as Tema Youth finished second in the Division One League, just behind Accra Lions, who secured promotion to the Premier League.
However, after the first round of the 2021-22 season, with Tema Youth leading Zone III, Appiah left the club following the expiration of his contract. The team ultimately finished third, with Kotoku Royals and Liberty Professionals claiming the top two spots.
A promising trial in Russia was cut short by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, forcing Appiah to return to Ghana.
In January 2024, he joined Legon Cities FC for the remainder of the 2023-24 season. After a brief spell, he became a free agent.
Now, Appiah Asare, who is under the Super Football Management Agency, is ready for a fresh start with Hearts of Oak.
Known for his blistering pace, agility, and dribbling prowess, he is expected to add a new dimension to the Phobians’ attacking options as they aim to reclaim their status as one of Ghana’s football giants.
