Rising Ghanaian boxer, Daniel Selassie Gorsh will battle experienced Beninois, Ghislain Vodounhessi for the WBO Africa bantamweight championship at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra tomorrow night after both came within the weight limit at Friday morning’s weigh-in.
Held just across the street from the famous Bukom Park AKA Bukom Square, Gorsh, a former Ghana and UBO Africa champion, tilted the scales at 118 lbs whilst Vodounhessi, largely based in Ghana and known affectionately as John Amuzu, came in at 117.1 lbs as both tried to intimidate each other in the special event in the heart of Bukom.
Undefeated Gorsh (12-0, 9 KOs), nicknamed The Emperor and trained by the world championship helmsman, Lawrence Carl Lokko, has been earmarked for greatness and he admits himself he faces the biggest test of his credentials on Saturday night against the 27-fight veteran whose last of only two career defeats came over four and half years ago.
Aside the defeat to former WBO Africa champ, Wasiru ‘Djatabi’ Mohammed in January 2020, Vodounhessi has defeated all 16 other Ghanaian opponents he has faced, with his other career loss in 25 victories, 23 KOs coming way back in 2013 against Mexico’s Manuel Roman in the USA.
“It definitely won’t be easy against an opponent who has been in the game for so many years. He has seen it all but this is my time, I am ready to take him down,” young Gorsh said.
“With the support of my management and tactical superiority of my coach, Carl Lokko, I can assure my fans of another victory. All I need is their prayers and support, this is the beginning of my journey to win the world title for Ghana,” the 24 year old added full of poise.
The fight headlines the debut show of new promotional syndicates, Shiatse Boxing headed by former Amasaman MP, Hon. Emmanuel Nii Okai Laryea and Legacy Fight Promotions who have Sawan Papa-Nii Amoah as CEO.
Originally scheduled for the Treehouse Restaurant owned by Legacy Promotions boss, Sawan Amoah, the high demand for tickets valued at GhS50 (Fifty Ghana Cedis) for popular stand and 500 Ghana Cedis for ringside VVIP, necessitated a shift to the plush Bukom Boxing Arena.
Also featuring on the bill is famous UK based chef cum boxer, Seth Gyimah, better known as Freezy Macbones in a light heavyweight contest scheduled for 10 rounds against David Okai. Gyimah came in at 178 lbs whilst Okai made a slightly heavier 179 lbs at Friday morning’s weighs.
Meanwhile, Isaac Dowuona AKA Zongo Fire came in at 135.4 lbs against Sani Yidana Kugblie’s 140.9 lbs whilst Azumah Mohammed made 138.8 lbs for the clash against Bernard Abbey who tilted the scales at 137.5 lbs.
In other supporting bouts, Paul Achaab (146.3 lbs) is up against Gideon Nortey (141.1 lbs), Isaac Neequaye (149.2 lbs) versus Godson Amuzu (149.2) and Haidar Al Bairak against Sylvanus Allotey wrap the highly competitive fight card which has Augustus ‘One Life’ Dodoo and Michael G. Akoto as matchmakers.
