The President of Ghana Athletics, Bawah Fuseini, has been named the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) Leader of the Year 2024.
Mr Fuseini, who assumed leadership of the athletics governing body in August 2023, received the accolade for his exceptional leadership during the Africa Games hosted by Ghana in March 2024.
In its 2024 rankings, the CAA stated:
“In March 2024, Ghana hosted the 13th All-Africa Games. It was unanimously agreed that the best competition of the Games was the athletics events, both in terms of the quality of the organisation and the attendance and enthusiasm of the public in the Ghanaian capital.
“The stadium was packed, with an atmosphere worthy of major sporting events. The Confederation of African Athletics decided to award its President, Bawah Fuseini, the distinction of Best Leader of the Year 2024. President Bawah Fuseini played a major role in this success.”
The CAA also noted Mr Fuseini’s contributions in securing the hosting rights for the 24th African Athletics Championships in 2026, further cementing Ghana’s reputation as a hub for athletics on the continent.
Speaking to JoySports, Mr Fuseini expressed gratitude and shared his perspective on the recognition:
“This award is not just for me but for Ghana Athletics as a whole. We are glad that the CAA has recognised the work we are doing in Ghana.
“Individually, this Excellence Award is a call to duty. I want to thank the CAA, Ghana Athletics, the Sports Ministry, the NSA, the media, and all Ghanaians for their crucial role during the African Games. They made it a success.
“The Local Organising Committee (LOC) was instrumental, and the athletics events were the best in recent times in Africa. While we celebrate this, we must aim for greater recognition at the global level,” he said.
Meanwhile, Yaw Agyeman, who was one of the call room officials at the Accra 2024 All-Africa Games in Ghana has been recognised for his outstanding contribution.
CAA said, “His duties included accompanying athletes from the call room to the workshops and starting lines. His seriousness, dedication and promptness ensured that no event was delayed.
“Yaw’s charisma and his way of working commanded the respect of the athletes and the observance of the necessary protocol.
“For this reason, the Confederation of African Athletics has decided to award him an exceptional mention of encouragement to persevere and hopes to see him in the same role again at the next African Championships in Accra in 2026. Yaw is a person with special needs.”
