2025 Duku paracycling festival inspires inclusivity and athletic excellence

The 2nd Duku Festival Road Race Prelude Para Cycling Event, an exciting sports and entertainment concept has been held by the Ghana Cycling Federation in collaboration other stake holders at the Osu Castle Total Filling Station in Accra on Wednesday January 1, 2025,.

The event featured six divisions: Male Tandem, Female Tandem, Hand Cycling (male and female), and Amputee (male and female).

Mr. Justice Awuku, Chairman of the Duku Festival Cycling Race said “We noticed that physically challenged individuals have been marginalized, so we decided to organize a special event for them.”

He expressed satisfaction with the turnout and performance of the participants, highlighting the impressive display of athleticism and sportsmanship. “It was mind-boggling to see a blind person riding a bicycle. It was very interesting and competitive, so I think thumbs up to them.”

The chairman also called on corporate Ghana to support para-cycling, emphasizing the capabilities and talents of individuals with disabilities. “We can’t continue to marginalize them. We have taken it upon ourselves to organize this event every year, and we hope to do it on a bigger stage.”

Frederick Assor, a renowned blind para-athlete in Ghana who placed third in the competition, praised the organizers for creating a platform for persons with disabilities. “This event has taken a lot of stress off us. We come together, meet friends, have fun, and compete.”

Shaaban Mohammed, General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, hailed the event as a resounding success. “The performance was amazing, and the prizes were impressive. We’re encouraged by the opportunities this event presents for para-cyclists in Ghana.”

The event was made possible by sponsors, including Dot Ateliers, Mr. D. J. Hyun, President of Derbywheel Incorporated, and the Association for Sports Federation On Disability (ASFOD).

Winners of the 2nd Edition Duku Festival Para Cycling Event:

The Male Tandem covered a distance of 42.5 kilometres

1st. Peter Dery Danvoru / Benjamin Boahen Agyemang with a time of 2.02.39.89 with a cash prize of GH 3,000.00, gold medals, and souvenirs from sponsors.

2nd. Emmanuel / George with a time of 2.18.24.36 with a cash prize of GH 2,000.00, silver medals, and souvenirs from sponsors.

3rd. Frederick Assor / Philip Randolf with a time of 2.19.25.35 with a cash prize of GH 1,000.00, bronze medals, and souvenirs from sponsors.

Female Tandem covered a distance of 17 kilometres.

1st. Favour Ayiglo / Abigail A. Tetteh with a time of 1.08.02.24 with a cash prize of GH 3,000.00, gold medals, and souvenirs from sponsors.

2nd. Beauty Fiator / Majorie Quaye with a time of 1.09 45.67 with a cash prize of GH 2,000.00, silver medals, and souvenirs from sponsors.

Male Amputee Covered a distance of 42.5 kilometres – Results

1st. RICHARD YAW ATTA with a time of .08.04.34 with a cash prize of GH 3,000.00, a gold medal, and souvenirs from sponsors.

2nd. EBENEZER MENSAH ADJEI with a time of 2.11.45.69 with a cash prize of GH 2,000.00, a silver medal, and souvenirs from sponsors.

3rd. KINGSLEY OFORI with a time of 15.00 87 with a cash prize of GH 1,000.00, bronze medals, and souvenirs from sponsors.

4th. BOSSUMAN KWEKU AYENSU with a time of 2.25.34.27 with a cash prize of GH 500.00 and souvenirs from sponsors.

Male Hand Cycling covered a distance of 17 kilometers – results

1st. FRANK YAW FUJI with a time of 1.10.12.97 with a cash prize of GH 3,000.00, a gold medal, and souvenirs from sponsors.
