Morocco’s Widad Bertal assured Africa of its first medal when she powered her way to the semi-finals of Women’s World Boxing Championships in Nis, Serbia on Thursday, March 13.
The top-seeded Moroccan in the bantamweight division stopped Vietnam Paris Olympian Vo Thi Kin Anh in the third round.
Bertal, two-time Africa champion and African Games gold medallist, was on top of her game, showering Anh with well executed combinations and timely jabs.
Two standing counts for the Vietnamese boxer courtesy Bertal’s well served dish of accurate face and head punches was a preamble of an inside-the-distance win for Bertal. Yes! She did it.
A one-two salvo to the head of Anh at the beginning of the third round saw her receiving another standing count after which the referee decided to stop the fight in favour of Bertal, a quarter-finalist at the Paris Olympics.
More to come in the round-up.
