Former Ghana star Sammy Kuffour unhappy with Black Stars captaincy decisions

Former Ghana international Sammy Kuffour has expressed his disapproval of how the Black Stars captaincy has been handled over the years, calling for more consistency in decision-making.

The issue of leadership in the national team has spanned different generations, with the latest development seeing Jordan Ayew appointed as captain, despite Thomas Partey being initially named.

The appointment follows previous instances where Mohammed Kudus and Alexander Djiku were also linked with the role, while substantive captain Andre Ayew has not officially retired.

Kuffour referenced the 2019 situation when Asamoah Gyan was stripped of the armband before the Africa Cup of Nations, with Andre Ayew taking over. He believes such decisions create unnecessary tension within the squad.

“We make [Black Stars captaincy] too complicated. It wasn’t the right decision to take the armband from Asamoah Gyan. As a member of the NC committee, I said, ‘Let Gyan remain captain since he had only a few months let,'” Kuffour told Sporty FM.

“We didn’t need to create tension for Dede or make Gyan feel isolated. A coach has to choose the [Black Stars] captain, and not the FA,” he emphasized.

Despite the controversy, Jordan Ayew has made a strong start as captain, leading Ghana to two impressive wins against Chad and Madagascar, contributing one goal and four assists.
