Faisal Abubakar seeks Sports Minister’s support

The management team of Ghana’s celebrated boxing star, Faisal Abubakar, currently rated 16th in the WBO Super Lightweight Division and reigning WBO African Champion, has called on the Minister for Sports and Recreation to bolster efforts in nurturing boxing talents across the country.

In a recent meeting with the Minister, the management expressed gratitude for the opportunity to discuss the development of Ghanaian boxing and to seek support that will enable the sport to thrive. They emphasized the importance of sustaining Abubakar’s career and developing upcoming talents to elevate Ghana’s status on the global boxing stage.

Faisal Abubakar, known for his exceptional skill and determination, has garnered admiration as a rising star with the potential to bring international glory to Ghana. The management highlighted the significant costs involved in maintaining a boxer at the world-class level, especially given the rigorous demands of defending titles and maintaining WBO rankings.

The meeting also touched on Ghana’s rich boxing history, including the national investment in facilities such as the Bukom Arena, built under the leadership of President John Mahama. However, the Hon. Minister lamented that the facility has not been managed to expectations, underscoring the need for better upkeep and utilization to foster talent.

Hon. Kofi Adams underscored the importance of patience and strategic development. “Ghana needs to do the right thing to get back to the world stage of glory,” he stated. “Trainers have a key role to play, and we must resist the temptation of quick money. Developing our talents thoroughly will lead to more rewarding opportunities, both for the athletes and the country as a whole.”

He further emphasized that a true world champion’s success is more than just monetary gain it builds a personal brand that opens doors to international opportunities and long-term prosperity. “We need to change the narrative,” he urged, advocating for a focus on sustainable development over short-term gains.

The management called on government and stakeholders to support initiatives that will nurture Ghanaian boxers from grassroots to the professional level, ensuring the country remains a competitive force in international boxing.

As Ghana aims to reclaim its place on the global boxing map, the message from the management and sports leaders is clear: patience, strategic investment, and a unified effort are essential to develop world-class champions and sustain Ghana’s proud boxing legacy. Said the Minister.
