Leading the charge: O’Neil Samba’s journey to Asante Kotoko captaincy

Samba O'Neil - Congolese defender ready to lead Kotoko to glory

Samba O’Neil’s journey to becoming Asante Kotoko’s captain is a testament to his leadership skills and dedication to the team. Here’s a closer look at his appointment and thoughts on leading the team:

Appointment as Captain

O’Neil was appointed Asante Kotoko’s new captain ahead of the 2025/26 season, replacing former captains Frederick Asare and Justice Blay whose contracts expired. He’ll be supported by first assistant captain Henry Ansu and second assistant captain Lord Amoah.

O’Neil acknowledges that taking on the captaincy role comes with immense pressure, but he’s confident in his leadership qualities to guide the team towards success.

He emphasizes the importance of teamwork and collective effort, stating that “sometimes I don’t need to talk, I just need to do, they will know our leader is doing this, and we have to do this”.

He is determined to make a significant impact in the upcoming season, with ambitions to win the Ghana Premier League and make a deep run in the CAF Confederation Cup.

O’Neil highlights the importance of the GHALCA Top Four tournament in preparing for the continental campaign, showcasing the team’s readiness and determination.

Leadership Style

O’Neil Samba’s impressive performances for Asante Kotoko have indeed caught the attention of many football fans in Ghana.

His leadership skills, defensive prowess, and ability to read the game make him a valuable asset to his team. Given his exceptional form, it’s no surprise that he’s being considered for a call-up to the Congolese national team.

Samba’s inclusion in the national team would not only be a testament to his hard work and dedication but also a great opportunity for him to showcase his skills on the international stage. His experience playing for Asante Kotoko in the Ghana Premier League and CAF Confederation Cup would undoubtedly be an asset to the Congolese national team.
