Accra Hearts of Oak delivered a heroic and disciplined performance to defeat fierce rivals Asante Kotoko 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium, securing a famous victory despite playing most of the match with ten men and ending Kotoko’s Premier League invincibility at home this season.
The Phobians struck early through Baba Adamu, whose looping header in the 14th minute proved decisive in a tense and fiercely contested Super Clash.
The defender capitalized on hesitant goalkeeping from Mohammed Camara, whose poor anticipation allowed the ball to drift beyond his reach and into the net, silencing the home crowd in Kumasi.
Hearts of Oak looked composed and in control following the breakthrough, dictating the tempo and frustrating Kotoko’s attempts to respond.
However, the match took a dramatic turn when right-back Emmanuel Amankwah was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a reckless challenge.
Reduced to ten men, Hearts were forced to retreat into a more defensive shape, showing resilience, tactical discipline, and unwavering determination to protect their slender advantage.
Kotoko increased the pressure as the game wore on, pushing forward in search of an equaliser. Despite dominating possession in the latter stages, the Porcupine Warriors struggled to create clear-cut chances.
Their best opportunity came late in the game, while Hearts themselves could have sealed victory earlier when Raphael Amponsah missed a one-on-one chance.
At the heart of Hearts’ triumph was goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who produced a commanding and assured performance. His composure, shot-stopping ability and leadership at the back earned him the Man of the Match award and ensured his side held firm under intense pressure.
The victory not only handed Hearts of Oak sweet revenge over their bitter rivals but also ended Kotoko’s unbeaten home league run this season.
More significantly, it reignites Hearts’ Premier League title ambitions, lifting them to second place and within five points of leaders Medeama.
Kotoko remain outside the top four and will be eager to respond when they face Young Apostles in their next fixture.
Hearts of Oak will look to build on their momentum when they host Berekum Chelsea, knowing their gritty triumph in Kumasi could prove a defining moment in their title pursuit.
