Africa to host IBA World Boxing Championship next year

Africa will for the first time ever host World Women’s Boxing Championships next year probably in Nairobi, the secretary-general of Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC), Andre Basile Kalong announced today.

And more goodies are coming to Africa, courtesy of International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev.

Speaking immediately on landing in Yaounde from Yerevan, Kalong (pictured on the right with Kremlev) said Nairobi is likely to host the world championships, IBA’s women’s most prestigious boxing extravaganza.

“I will share more details on the world championships in due course,” said Kalong.

The inaugural edition of the women’s version took place in 2001 in Scranton in the US state of Pennsylvania.

Kalong said more major tournaments and goodies are coming to Africa all aimed at improving the standards of the sport and motivate the boxers.

“It’s a revolution of boxing in our continent,” said Kalong, “soon I will share more good news from IBA.

Kalong said Kremlev has pledged to fully support AFBC in the development of the sport.

“Kremlev is very happy with Africa for overwhelmingly supporting him in the Extraordinary Congress in Yerevan, thirty-six delegates from our continent voted in his favour, ” said a jovial Kalong.

“The IBA President said Africa will benefit from a lot of material and equipment. He’s very enthusiastic about Africa’s boxing progress.

“Sports goods manufacturers Adidas will also support AFBC financially and with equipment too. This is what we’ve been missing to develop our boxing in Africa. IBA will also assist us host courses at all levels.”
