Penalty drama as Dichemso, Ejisu reach MTN Ashantifest Soccer semis

Emmanuel Owusu Boakye of Kwadaso speaks to the media after powering his side into the semi finals of the 2023 MTN Ashantifest Community Soccer tournament

Ghana Premier League star, Emmanuel Owusu Boakye has put himself in the best of positions to win the top scorer gong of the 2023 MTN Ashantifest Community Soccer tournament after he scored one of the two goals that propelled Kwadaso over Suame into the semi finals on Friday.

Boakye who plays for Karela United in the Ghanaian top flight, sealed the 2-0 win for Kwadaso after Emmanuel Duah had put the Zone D runners-up into the lead in quarter final 3 at the Dichemso Otumfuo Park. It brought his tally for the campaign to six goals, level with Atonsu hitman, Richard Antwi who is no more in competiton.

Richmond Antwi scored 6 goals in two preliminary round matches for Atonsu

Antwi who is currently on the books of Moroccan side, Olympique de Khourigba, having also previously turned out for Phoenix FC in the US, struck an unprecedented five goals in Atonsu’s comprehensive 7-2 drubbing of Adum in match 3 of Zone D.

With his side only finishing 3rd in the section and therefore eliminated, the former Legon Cities striker left the door wide open for Owusu Boakye who amassed five goals in the preliminary round.

After hitting a hat-trick against whipping boys Adum, Boakye did in fact, go ahead to score the two goals that eclipsed Antwi’s one for Atonsu when Kwadaso won their match 2 tie in Zone D 2-1 which proved decisive to also seal second place and qualification to the next stage.

And full advantage, Boakye did take, scoring in the victory that ensured Kwadaso became the only runner-up in any of the four preliminary groups to make it into the semi finals, and Suame the first group winners to lose out in the quarters.

No such misery for Zone D champs, Santasi who strolled into the last four without a hitch and are ever closer to lifting the ultimate trophy they now appear huge favourites to annex.

The only side to boast a 100% record in the group phase maintained their perfect run after grinding out a 1-0 win over Zone C runners-up, Bantama. Stephan Owusu Banahene struck the decisive goal to set up a semi final clash against Dichemso.

First last four tie however sees Ejisu take on Emmanuel Owusu Boakye’s Kwadaso at the same Dichemso Otumfuo Park this Friday, 21 July, followed same day, same venue by the hosts versus favourites battle for a place in the final and a tilt at the GHS20,000 prize money.
