Kwesi Appiah becomes first Ghanaian coach to defeat Black Stars

Kwesi Appiah has made history as the first Ghanaian coach to lead another national team to defeat the Black Stars.

His Sudanese side’s impressive 2-0 win on Tuesday not only brought them closer to qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations but also showcased Appiah’s tactical prowess.

The last coach to beat Ghana was the late Osam Duodu, who orchestrated a victory against the Black Starlets with Gambia in the 2005 African U-17 Championship final while David Duncan was at the helm for the Black Starlets. However, Appiah’s achievement marks the first time any Ghanaian coach has defeated the senior national team.

Previously, Appiah led the Black Stars during two stints, making history by taking Ghana to the 2014 World Cup as the first Ghanaian coach to do so. However, he was sacked in 2019.

Since taking over in Sudan, Appiah has found remarkable success despite the country’s political challenges. When he assumed the role, Sudan was a sinking ship, but they now stand just one good result away from clinching their place in AFCON for the first time since 2021.

Additionally, they currently lead their 2026 World Cup qualifiers ahead of Senegal.
