Turkish Ministry of Interior’s intervention in Sports Writers Association sparks outrage

TYSD president Oğuz Tongsir

The recent decision by the Turkish Ministry of Interior to intervene in the affairs of the Turkish Sports Writers Association (TSYD) has been met with widespread criticism, with many calling it an unacceptable violation of democratic principles.

Oğuz Tongsir, who was elected president of the association for a fourth term by 499 votes from its respective members, has been suspended from his role. In his place, a trustee has been appointed by the Turkish Court and the Ministry of Interior, overriding the democratic process.

A PURE POLITICAL DECISION

This move is widely seen as a ‘politically motivated’ action. According to the Turkish Constitution, political involvement in the internal affairs of associations is prohibited. The right of members to elect their representatives should be respected, with decisions based solely on the free will of those involved. The suspension of Tongsir, a four-time elected president, undermines the very essence of democratic participation within the association.

As the country recently celebrated International Journalists’ Day, the timing of this intervention has only amplified concerns. The board of TSYD has strongly condemned the government’s decision, labelling it a direct attack on the freedom of the press and the democratic processes that should govern all associations.

“This is a clear intervention in free will and democracy within our association. Anyone who is elected by the members should only leave through democratic elections,” the board stated.

CALL FOR GLOBAL SUPPORT

The TSYD is now calling for solidarity from journalists and press organizations worldwide. In their statement, the board emphasized the need for international support to shed light on this undemocratic move.

“We cannot accept this governmental intervention. The press thrives on freedom, and without it, our ability to operate independently and uphold journalistic integrity is compromised,” they said.

The TSYD is urging organizations like the International Sports Press Association (AIPS), AIPS Europe, and other global press associations to raise their voices in protest. They are asking for support in spreading the word about the injustice that has befallen their association, hoping to garner international attention and pressure to reverse the decision.

DEFENDING PRESS FREEDOM

At the core of this issue is press freedom, which is under increasing threat. The TSYD argues that government interference undermines their independence and sets a dangerous precedent for other organizations facing similar political pressure. The TYSD is calling for global support to defend democracy, press freedom, and their right to self-governance.
