Serbia, Ghana strengthen sports ties through diplomatic collaboration

In a significant diplomatic engagement, H.E. Mr. Marko Duric, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, paid a courtesy visit to Hon. Kofi Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation.

The meeting underscored the importance of deepening the historic ties established by Ghana’s founding father, Kwame Nkrumah, and explored avenues for expanding sports cooperation between the two nations.

During the discussions, Minister Duric emphasised the need to continue solidifying the existing diplomatic relationship, highlighting Serbia’s rich experience in sports development. He pointed out that Serbia, endowed with a state-of-the-art National Sports Training Centre and several sports and athletics camps, offers valuable resources that Ghana can leverage in its sports growth initiatives.

The two ministers signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at fostering collaboration in sports development. This agreement is designed to promote mutual benefits, with both countries exploring opportunities for joint sports programs, training, and cultural exchanges.

The partnership aims to harness Serbia’s expertise in coaching, athletics, and sports management to bolster Ghana’s ambitions in these areas.

Hon. Kofi Adams expressed appreciation for Serbia’s interest and reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to strengthening sports diplomacy.

“Ghana has a rich sports tradition, and our management and technical teams are well-positioned to collaborate with Serbia,” he stated.

Hon. Adams also highlighted Ghana’s interest in developing basketball, a sport where Serbia’s global prominence can serve as a model.

Additionally, Ghana’s favourable climate and infrastructure makes it an ideal location for pre-tournament training camps.

The meeting also covered upcoming international sports events, notably an international Sports and Cultural Expo scheduled in Serbia, which has already attracted participation commitments from 117 countries, with 130 others providing verbal confirmations.

Minister Duric extended an invitation to Ghana to participate in the expo, viewing it as a prime platform for fostering business opportunities, innovation, and cultural exchange among nations.

As the two nations look forward to further strengthening their sports relationship, both agree that continued dialogue and cooperation will pave the way for enhanced cultural ties and shared sporting success. The collaboration signals a promising chapter in Ghana-Serbia relations, built on mutual respect and the shared goal of sports excellence.
