The 2025 Africa Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championship has officially been opened, with the event scheduled to run from August 18 to 22, 2025, at the Ga Mashie Hall inside the Trust Sports Emporium in Accra.

The championship will feature over 200 athletes and officials from 13 African countries, including Algeria, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, and host nation Ghana.

In his welcome address, President of the Ghana Weightlifting Federation, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, said:
“Ghana is deeply committed to ensuring a memorable and successful championship. We have prepared with great care and dedication to provide an enjoyable experience, both on and off the platform.

“To our young athletes—this is your time. Compete with courage, fairness, and passion. Remember that every lift you make contributes not only to your personal journey but also to the future of African weightlifting.”

For his part, President of the Weightlifting Federation of Africa, Khaled Mehalhel, praised Ghana for staging an outstanding opening ceremony and urged the country to aim higher in the coming years.

“What we have witnessed here in Accra is remarkable. Ghana has proven it has the capacity to organize events of international standards. I strongly encourage Ghana to position itself to host the World Championship in the near future,” he said.

Also present at the opening ceremony were former President of the Ghana Olympic Committee, Ben Nunoo Mensah; current GOC President, Richard Akpokavie; the Deputy Director General of the National Sports Authority Veronica Commey; and representatives of the Ga Mantse.
