Ghanaian karatekas have delivered an impressive performance at the West Africa Shotokan Karate Championship in Togo, securing two silver medals and a bronze at the one-day regional contest held on Sunday, November 23, 2025.
The competition brought together athletes from seven countries, including Togo, Nigeria, Ghana, Niger, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire and Burkina Faso, in a showcase of technical excellence across kata and kumite disciplines.
Three members of the Ghanaian contingent, Edmund Asante, Kpoti Jacobs and Joseph Botchway, distinguished themselves with podium finishes. Their medals came in the male individual kata seniors, male individual kumite and male individual kata juniors categories respectively.
Asante’s silver medal in the kata division was described as a standout achievement, reflecting his precision, discipline and commitment to the sport. Botchway’s strong performance in the kumite category earned Ghana another medal, demonstrating what officials described as his “strength and agility” in a highly competitive field.
The Ghana Karate-Do Federation, led by Nathaniel Johnson, has praised the athletes for lifting the nation’s flag high. Officials noted that the steady progress of Ghana’s karate programme is beginning to reflect in regional competitions, suggesting a promising trajectory for the sport.
The Federation says it remains committed to expanding training opportunities, strengthening technical development and positioning Ghana as a competitive force in African karate. With continued investment and structured support, stakeholders believe Ghanaian karatekas are poised for even greater success in forthcoming international events.
