Borussia Dortmund officials, led by former Black Stars forward Ibrahim Tanko, have arrived in Accra ahead of the official launch of the BVB International Academy Ghana, marking the German club’s first academy on the African continent.
The landmark launch event is scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026, and has received the backing of Ghana’s Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, underscoring the significance of the initiative to football development in the country.
The BVB International Academy Ghana is designed to combine Borussia Dortmund’s globally recognised training standards with a strong local identity rooted in Ghanaian football culture.
The academy will provide a clear and structured development pathway for young players between the ages of 6 and 18, focusing not only on technical excellence but also on discipline, education, and character development.
Based at Achimota School, the academy will operate a dual-pathway model, catering to both elite talents with professional ambitions and recreational players seeking structured football development in a supportive environment. This approach ensures inclusivity while maintaining high-performance standards.
Community access forms a central pillar of the project. In line with this, 20 per cent of the academy’s intake will be reserved for scholarship opportunities, specifically targeting underprivileged but talented young players who may otherwise lack access to professional training environments.
To mark the launch, a series of activities have been planned, including a youth football clinic aimed at introducing young players to the BVB training philosophy.
The day will also feature a public watch party for Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga clash against Wolfsburg, offering fans an opportunity to engage with the club and celebrate the start of a new chapter for youth football development in Ghana.
The BVB International Academy Ghana represents a significant step in strengthening football ties between Ghana and Germany while opening new opportunities for the next generation of Ghanaian footballers.
