The Ghana Cycling Federation (GCF) has laid out an ambitious and record-breaking roadmap for the sport, officially unveiling its 2026 Program of Activities. The packed calendar, released earlier this week, signals a major push to unearth local talent, increase grassroots participation, and firmly establish Ghana as a competitive force on the international stage.
With a schedule boasting nearly 60 events across road, track, mountain bike, BMX, and para-cycling, 2026 is shaping up to be the most dynamic year in the federation’s history. The activities range from local community festivals and youth development camps to high-stakes UCI-ranked tours and representation at major global games.
“We are not just organizing races; we are building a sustainable ecosystem for cycling in Ghana,” said Shaaban Mohammed, General Secretary of the GCF. “This calendar reflects our commitment to creating a clear pathway for our cyclists—from the districts all the way to the world championships.”
A Year of High-Octane Competition
The year kicks off in January with the 2nd Edition Doku Festival Prelude in Osu and quickly escalates with the launch of the National Premier Cycling League, a 28-week series designed to provide consistent, high-quality competition for local clubs.
International ambitions take center stage in the spring. April will see the Kwahu Easter International Cycling Tour, while May features the Africa Continental Track and Para-Track Championships on home soil. The road show continues with the popular 3FM Tour Du Ghana, which returns in June.
The quest for international glory intensifies in July and August. The GCF calendar explicitly targets qualification for the Commonwealth Games, with a squad of riders expected to be in top form. The momentum continues into autumn with several UCI-ranked tours, including the prestigious Tour du La Paix (Peace Tour) in Côte d’Ivoire and the Tour Du Faso in Burkina Faso.
Global Showdowns and Homegrown Heroes
The pinnacle of the international season will see Ghanaian riders test their mettle against the world’s best. The calendar highlights participation in the UCI World Road Championships in Canada and the UCI World Paracycling Road Championships in the USA, crucial events for rankings and, for the paracyclists, qualification for the Paralympic Games.
Closer to home, the federation is ensuring the sport remains deeply connected to Ghanaian culture. Events like the Aboakyer Festival Cycling Tour, the Homowo Cycling Challenge, and the Hogbetsotso Festival Cycling Challenge integrate the sport with traditional celebrations, bringing racing directly to the people.
The season will culminate in November and December with a flurry of activity, including the Africa Road Championships (UCI Rank) , the Farmers Day Cycling Championships, and the prestigious International Tour Du Ghana (UCI Rank) . The year will close with the GCF Congress, an End of Year cycling festival, and a Awards Dinner Night to celebrate the nation’s cycling heroes.
With a strong focus on development—including coaching seminars, talent hunts, and insurance coverage for 700 individuals—the GCF is building a foundation for long-term success.
The federation has extended an invitation to sponsors, clubs, media, and all cycling enthusiasts to engage with the 2026 calendar and contribute to what promises to be a transformative year for the sport.
