The Secretary General of the Ghana Cycling Federation, Shaaban Mohammed, has praised the ongoing EU Velocity Cycling Tour for Sustainability, describing it as a historic and transformative 8-day cycling initiative from Tamale to Accra, scheduled from 12th to 18th April 2026.

He noted that history is being made as European Union Ambassadors reach Kumasi, the fourth stop on their remarkable 800-kilometer journey from Tamale to Accra, commemorating 50 years of the European Union.

“This extraordinary journey continues to demonstrate endurance, unity, self-discipline, and shared commitment, while highlighting Ghana’s growing importance as a gateway to Africa. The successful execution of this tour reinforces Ghana’s position as a beacon of peace, stability, and democratic consistency on the continent,” he stated.

Mr. Mohammed emphasized that cycling, both as a sport and a recreational activity, is gaining strong momentum in Ghana, driven by the country’s democratic environment, which supports sports development, international collaboration, and active community engagement.

“The Ghana Cycling Federation proudly recognizes this initiative as a major step toward promoting sustainable transport, healthy lifestyles, and global cooperation through cycling,” he said.

He commended all ambassadors, cyclists, stakeholders, and partners whose dedication continues to make the historic ride a success.

Marking Day Four of the seven-day ride, the tour has now officially passed the halfway mark, covering an impressive 460 kilometers.

The delegation was seen off in Sunyani by the Bono Regional Minister, Hon. Joseph Addae Akwaboa, and warmly received upon arrival in Kumasi by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene.

Despite the demanding nature of the journey, participants described the experience as challenging but rewarding, with every kilometre contributing to a larger purpose.

The journey continues with the next stages scheduled as follows:

Thursday, 16th April 2026: Kumasi to Nkawkaw

Friday, 17th April 2026: Nkawkaw to Aburi

Saturday, 18th April 2026: Grand Finale from Aburi to Accra, culminating in a ceremonial event at the Netherlands Embassy at 9:30 AM

Mr. Shaaban further highlighted the environmental impact of the initiative, noting that over 1,000 trees are being planted along the route as part of the sustainability agenda.

“The 7-day tour is already leaving a lasting legacy, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s growing recreational sports landscape and supporting the vision of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation,” he said.

He stressed that the ambassadors and cyclists involved in this historic journey deserve national recognition and applause for their commitment and inspiration.
Ghana, he added, continues to gain global recognition, and this event stands as a symbol of the country’s rising influence, unity, and forward-looking vision.

The Ghana Cycling Federation also expressed sincere gratitude to Natasha Mann-Dedey, Co-Founder, Operations and Programmes Lead at Jambo Spaces, for her valuable contribution and support.

Mr. Shaaban further noted that the EU Velocity Cycling Tour sets a strong example and challenge to Ministers of State, Members of Parliament, Chiefs, MMDCEs, and all Ghanaians to embrace cycling as a means of transportation—promoting a greener environment, reducing traffic congestion, improving healthy lifestyles, and fostering self-discipline.

The Ghana Cycling Federation and its stakeholders extend special appreciation to the participating diplomatic missions and partners, including German Embassy Accra, Embassy of the Netherlands in Ghana, Embassy of the Czech Republic in Accra, French Embassy in Ghana/Ambassade de France au Ghana, Embassy of Denmark in Ghana, Embassy of Spain in Ghana, Embassy of Hungary, Accra, Italy in Ghana and Togo, High Commission of Malta in Ghana, EU International Partnerships, European External Action Service (EEAS), GCF and its stakeholders say Ayekoo! Together, we ride towards a sustainable and united future.
