Feature: Rejected by Kotoko, Afriyie Barnieh celebrates five trophies in utopian 2020/21 season

It is a common practice for footballers across the globe to flourish at some points in their careers after getting rejected by other clubs for poor performance.

The recent cases of Jesse Lingard from Manchester United FC to West Ham or Memphis Depay to Olympique Lyon are just two of countless scenarios in world football.

Before the commencement of the 2020/21 domestic football season in Ghana, Daniel Afriyie was inches away from registering for Asante Kotoko SC after spending several weeks with the Reds.

Unconvincing performances and differences on the negotiation table left the wide man packing bag and baggage out of Kumasi despite playing some friendly football matches for the Reds.

Just 8 months into his exit from the camp of Asante Kotoko SC, Daniel Afriyie ended the 2020/21 season in Ghana as the most decorated player in the trophy haul.

The speedster started his winning journey with the National U-20 team at the WAFU Zone B level and ended it with an MTN FA Cup crown.

An historic Premier league crown with Accra Hearts of Oak SC, AFCON U-20 gold medal, Man of the Match in the AFCON U-20 Finals and the MTN FA Cup golden boot.

The one time rejected footballer from Asante Kotoko SC ended up winning more medals than any football in Ghana under the 2020/21 domestic season.

His full list of medals and trophy haul for the 2020/21 season are namely the WAFU Zone B, Under 20 AFCON, Man of the match in U-20 AFCON final, Ghana Premier League, MTN FA Cup and MTN FA Cup top scorer.
